Copyediting and Proofreading for Writers

Hello! I’m Anne Gillion, a professional copyeditor/proofreader and owner of ASG Editorial. I set up my business at the start of 2017, and now most of my clients are  fiction and non-fiction writers, both self-published and published authors.

I also edit blog posts and web content for small businesses and non-profits.

I am an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), and you will usually find me working at my desk in a tranquil corner of Norfolk.

You can find out more in my CIEP directory entry. Just click on the button below:

Which Service is Right for You?

Typically, the buck stops with the proofreader – it’s the final stage before publication – so your novel, guide, or web content should be almost ready to see the light of day. By the time you need the services of a proofreader, your material will have been edited and formatted (typeset) and just need those final all-important checks: for example, page numbers, titles, headings, footers and fonts.

Sometimes called line-editing, copyediting operates at a much more detailed level than proofreading. It focuses on the text – ironing out ambiguities, inconsistencies and repetition of words, as well as errors of grammar, punctuation and spelling. Checking facts, references, legal issues, looking out for plagiarism and creating a style sheet are also part of this editing process.

This is a hybrid of copyediting and proofreading. It’s reserved for documents that are fairly ‘clean’ but need more than a proofread. So, some sentences might need rewriting for clarity but at nowhere near the level needed for a detailed copyedit. If you want to save time and money, and your material has already been looked over and checked a few times, a proof-edit might be for you.

Anne, thank you so much – you have been such a great help in writing my book. Your clear understanding of the English language gained over many years as a professional editor, freelance writer and proofreader has proved invaluable – I am not sure how I could have done it without you.
